FRIENDS FOR THE JOURNEY

When I was in eighth grade, God gave me an unlikely friend. I met Charis at the NYX Face Awards. A beauty vlogger like me, Charis had this amazing, magnetic personality. She loves Jesus and she wasn’t afraid to tell anyone about it! Charis is ten years older than me, but our shared faith and purpose in life bonded us immediately.

Even though she lived in Alaska and I lived in Illinois, we kept in touch after the competition, talking often about what God was doing in our lives. Sometimes we would pray together over the phone. We even went on a mission trip together!

Charis is an encourager, and has continued to find out what’s happening in my life and give me solid advice. Our relationship isn’t necessarily a best friend relationship—it’s more of her encouraging me and showing me how to grow. She’s a wise leader in my life, and I consider her friendship one of God’s greatest gifts to me. And I hope, as she sees the influence she’s having in my life, she is inspired to encourage even more young women.

Not every friendship will last a lifetime, and that’s okay. Some people will come into your life for a little while and then fade out. Maybe you’ve experienced “growing apart” from someone you used to be really close with. Having different friends at different points in your life is natural. But sometimes you’ll meet a friend you will have for a lifetime. These are friends for the journey.

Both “friends for a season” and “friends for the journey” are valuable. God uses them in different ways to help you to grow and shape you into the person he’s transforming you to be. Some of the most beautiful experiences in life happen within the context of friendship.

Stay in the habit of making friends throughout your life. There’s an old song that goes, “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold.” Whether your friends are old or new, they are a treasure, and a person who has a true friend is very rich. Thank God for your friends and do your best to treat them well!
